Ben Vargas Short Stuff

About the Festival

The Ben Vargas Short Stuff Festival (BVSS), originally named "Short Stuff Festival", is the fall semester’s student-focused showcase. Each year, TTSS gives student playwrights the opportunity to submit short plays, partially-developed stories, and experimental new works. Pieces are submitted anonymously and chosen by the E-Board. After pieces are chosen, production teams are assembled and actors are cast. Finally, each piece gets to collaborate, workshop, rehearse, and perform! Through this festival, TTSS aims to create an environment that gives people the opportunity to develop their work, take on a new role in the theater-making process, and have fun!

Who is Ben Vargas?

Ben Vargas graduated from Temple University in May of 2018. He was a beloved member of Temple’s Theater Department who was passionate about theater and radiated positivity. In the time he spent at Temple, Ben was very active in clubs such as the theater fraternity Alpha Psi Omega, Insomnia Theater, and Temple Theaters Side Stage, serving as the Technical Director. Ben unfortunately passed away in August of 2018 after a two-year battle with bone cancer. In honor of Ben, Side Stage changed the name of the festival to the "Ben Vargas Short Stuff Festival" as a tribute to our dear friend, amazing board member, and passionate theater artist.
